Status: Critical/ Endangered
General: The northernmost complex of humid tropical forests on American continent stretching from south Tamaulipas province on the Atlantic coast south through Veracruz to Chiapas and further to El Petén in Guatemala.
Special: The reserve was pronounced in 1980 as a Wildlife refugee and later promoted to Biosphere reserve status.
Climate:

Tropical humid with annual precipitation that varies in between 110 and 160 mm.
Tropical sub humid with mean annual temperature of 25 °C and with 60 mm precipitation in the driest month.
Fauna: Many endemic species of insects and birds.
Dangers: Large portions of the original habitat disappeared due to logging and cattle grazing. In the reserve itself, unregulated tourism poses a threat as well as illegal extirpation of fauna.
