Geographic range: Neotropical: Restricted to S Mexico, S Belize and N Guatemala. In Mexico found in Tabasco, N Chiapas and Yucatan peninsula.

Physical characteristics: Large and stocky monkey. The body is entirely black with a glossy sheen. Males larger than females, with longer beard.

Food habits: Herbivorous. Mostly fruit, leaves, seeds and flowers are consumed.

Reproduction: Single young is born, breeding occurs all year round.

Behavior: Arboreal. Social - forms groups of 2 -6 animals. Unique form of vocalization resembling growls and howls. Mostly males vocalize.

Habitat: Lowlands only. Evergreen forest, semideciduous forest, riparian vegetation, tall secondary growth.
