Geographic range:
Neotropical: Found in Mexico and disjunctly in South America from
Venezuela to Argentina. In Mexico populations have been decimated
by pet trade. Found locally from south Sonora to Jalisco on Pacific
slope and on Atlantic slope form Nuevo Leon to San Luis Potosi. Questionable
in Colima to Guerrero. Formerly south to Chiapas.
Physical characteristics: Large,
predominantly green parrot (around 70 cm tall). Ages and sexes similar.
Body almost entirely green, rump and tail coverts turquoise. Central
rectrices red. Naked face whitish with red and black bristle - like
feathers. Beak strong and black. Tail very long. Unmistakable within
its range.
Food habits: Seeds, nuts, berries
and fruits produced in the treetops.
Reproduction: Mating season in mexican
populations from April to July. Clutch consist of up to three eggs,
incubated for 26 - 28 days by the female only. The young fledge after
three month. Nests in tree cavities and rock crevices.
Behavior: Flies with shallow, graceful
wing beats. Usually in pairs or groups.
Habitat: Semi deciduous forest
