Geographic range: Nearctic, Neotropical: From W North America, through Mexico down to Central America, Caribbean and locally South America. In Mexico almost throughout, but distribution throughout the year poorly known.

Physical characteristics: Middle -sized owl, with pale brown facial disk and white brows and collar on throat. Overall color sandy brown, barred with pale buff. Chest displays strongest barring. Legs long, toes bristled.

Food habits: Predator. Primarily hunts for small vertebrates.

Reproduction: Nests in burrows, often in colony. Typical clutch has 7- 9 eggs.

Behavior: Hunts from perches. Also often during the day. Terrestrial.

Habitat:
Arid to semiarid, open to semi open country.
