Geographic range: Neotropical: Endemic to SE Mexico. States of Veracruz, N Oaxaca, NW Chiapas, W Tabasco.

Physical characteristics: Large rodent with robust body, arched back and long slender legs. Overall body color is black (reddish in related species D. punctata). Small claws on feet resemble hoofs. Forefoot with 4, hind foot with 3 toes. Naked skin around eyes and ears is pinkish.

Food habits: Herbivorous. Eats mainly fruit, soft seeds and new growth.

Reproduction: Young are born during dry season. Typical litter has 1-2.

Behavior: Terrestrial and diurnal. Sometimes active at night. Usually seen alone or in pairs. Pairs defend territories of 1-2 ha.

Habitat: Lowlands to 600 m. Evergreen forest, secondary growth.
