Geographic Range: Nearctic, Neotropical: Found from California to N Peru and Galapagos Islands in Pacific and from SE USA to Brazil in Atlantic ocean.

Physical Characteristics: A large (95-103 cm wingspan) black seabird with extremely long, angled wings and a scissor-like tail that are often folded in a point (Peterson, 1980). This species has a long hooked bill.
The males of this species are all black with a red throat pouch that can be inflated during display. Females have black bodies with black heads and white breasts. Juveniles have black bodies with white heads and white breasts.

Food Habits: Fish, jellyfish, squids, crustaceans, young turtles, and young birds. This species is particularly known for pirating food from other sea birds.

Reproduction: Breeding season is different for each group of frigate birds and breeding colonies can be found throughout the year. Nests are constructed of twigs, reeds, seaweed, and grass and are placed in low trees and shrubs. This species has a clutch size of one and a 6 month fledgling period.

Behavior: The magnificent frigate birds spend the non-breeding season patrolling their range for food and occasionally resting on oceanic coasts and islands.
