NEOTROPICAL WHIPSNAKE

Geographic range: Neotropical: Found from Mexico to Costa Rica and disjunctly in Panama, N Colombia and Venezuela. In Mexico on both slopes from Sonora and San Luis Potosi south, also Yucatan peninsula.

Physical characteristics: Large (100 - 180 cm) robust, uniformly colored snake with no visible color pattern. Upperbody usually tan brown or grayish. Head rather narrow, with slightly pronounced neck. Pupils round. Usually 17 rows of scales at midbody.

Food habits: Feed mostly on lizards, snakes, small mammals.

Behavior: Terrestrial, but sometimes in shrubs and trees. Fast moving, alert hunter. Non venomous, but will bite readily.

Reproduction: Clutch size of 16 - 30 eggs deposited during spring months.

Habitat:
Open habitats - savannas, forest edges, beaches, mangroves.
