TEXAS CORAL SNAKE

Geographic range: Nearctic - Neotropical: Found from S USA to N Mexico. In Mexico found in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon south to Central Tamaulipas.

Physical characteristics: Colorful medium sized snake. Length varies in between 60 - 90 cm. Highly conspicuous rings of black, yellow, and red around the body. Yellow rings are thinner compared to the black and red rings. Black neck band extends forward to include rear tips of parietal scales.

Food habits: Feed mostly on lizards and other snakes.

Behavior: Terrestrial, diurnal highly venomous snake. Venom contains neurotixins and although this species is not aggressive, it can deliver a very serious bite with potentially disastrous consequences.

Reproduction: Clutch of 3-12 eggs is laid in June; young hatch in September and measure 18-23 cm.

Habitat:
Near water bodies, ponds or streams in forested areas, also rocky hillsides and canyons.
