NEOTROPIC CORMORANT

Geographic range: Nearctic, Neotropical: Found from SW USA to Mexico, Caribbean and South America. In Mexico on both coasts from Sinaloa and Tamaulipas south.

Physical characteristics: Medium sized cormorant with rather long tail. Neck long, common to all cormorants. Facial skin brownish yellow to orange. In adults little or no green sheen to plumage especially in juveniles. Juveniles dark brown.

Food habits: Mostly fish, but also crustaceans and amphibians.

Reproduction: Breeds colonially.

Behavior: Often in large concentrations. Perches on trees, fence posts etc. Flies with neck outstretched (common to all cormorants).

Habitat:
On sea close to shore, lakes, marshes, coastal lagoons, mangroves, ponds.
