Geographic range: Nearctic - Neotropical: Found from S Canada, through USA, Mexico and Central America throughout South America down south to S Argentina and S Chile. In Mexico throughout.

Physical characteristics: Biggest non- spotted cat in Americas. Head smaller than in jaguar, body less stocky. Overall body color yellow brown to reddish. Underparts lighter. Tail long, tipped black.

Food habits: Carnivorous. Eats variety of vertebrates, prefers medium to large prey (deer, pacas...etc.)

Reproduction: Mating all year round. Typical litter 1 -6.

Behavior: Terrestrial, but good climber. Both diurnal and nocturnal activity. Known to cover considerable distances and to occupy a large territory.

Habitat: Variety of forested and open habitats, except mangroves and flooded areas.
