Geographic range: Nearctic, Neotropical:SW USA through Mexico and Central America to N Argentina and NW Peru.

Physical characteristics: Relatively low standing. Large head, stocky, short legs. Overall color dark brown, or gray, with a prominent whitish collar from shoulders to chest.

Food habits: Omnivorous. Mostly fruits and seeds, but also invertebrates.

Reproduction: Litter 1- 4 (usually 2).

Behavior: Active both by day and night, although becoming almost nocturnal in areas where heavily persecuted. Rests and sleeps under logs and outcroppings, also in abandoned burrows. Travels mostly in groups (2 -50 individuals, usually around 5).

Habitat: Forests, grassland, deserts.
