Geographic range: Nearctic - Neotropical: Found from SE Canada, through USA, Mexico and Central America south to Colombia and Venezuela.

Physical characteristics: Small ( head and body 50 - 70 cm long) and slender canid with relatively short legs and long tail. Overall color is grayish , belly, throat and cheeks are white. Legs, sides of neck rusty colored. Ears are long, triangular and help upright. Tail is bushy and black above.

Food habits: Omnivorous. Opportunistic feeder. Consumes fruit, small vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, birds) and insects.

Reproduction: Typical litter size 1 - 7.

Behavior: Mainly nocturnal, although may be active in highland and forested areas. Mostly seen singly, but is known to form family groups. Mostly terrestrial, but climbs very well. Dens can be located in hollow logs, burrows, but also high in the trees, which is an exception in canids.

Habitat: Deciduous and semideciduous forest, agricultural land, arid areas. Lowlands from sea level to 2600 m.
